Biography
Short (50 words). Wills Brothers Quartet carries a Texas gospel legacy that began in 1938 with Pop Wills and grew through Bob Wills & The Inspirationals. Led today by Bob’s sons Don and Ron Wills with Scott Brand, John Rulapaugh, and pianist Bryan Elliott, the Fort Worth quartet now records for StowTown Records.
The Wills Brothers Quartet carries a Texas gospel heritage that began in 1938, when A. B. “Pop” Wills and his wife Lou started singing out of the Memphis and Hall County area of Texas, shaped by church singing, singing conventions, and the Stamps gospel tradition. Their son Bob Wills joined the family singers as a child and, in 1958, formed Bob Wills & The Inspirationals — later known as the Bob Wills Family — gathering some of the most gifted voices in gospel music under his leadership. Alumni over the years include Art Bain, Ray Burdett, Bob Cameron, Jeff Chapman, Curtis Elkins, Larry Gatlin, Ralph Green, Big John Hall, Roger McDuff, Gary McSpadden, Jim Murray, Dale Shipley, Jim Tucker, Jory Walden, and Jim Wesson.
In 1965 the family helped make gospel television history with Wills Family Inspirational Time, 108 full-color programs syndicated to 50 markets and believed to be the first full-color syndicated gospel television show in the country. Bob’s work encouraging younger musicians and sustaining gospel music across Dallas–Fort Worth earned him induction into the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
In 2017 Bob’s sons Bobby, Don, and Ron Wills brought the group back together, joined by Ralph Green — who first sang lead with The Inspirationals in 1972 — and tenor Dan Keeton. John Rulapaugh joined as tenor in 2021 and pianist Bryan Elliott in 2022. To avoid long-running confusion with a similarly named group, the quartet performed as The Inspirationals Quartet of Texas from 2023. When Ralph Green retired in 2024 after more than fifty years with the group, Scott Brand stepped into the lead position.
In 2026 the group took the Wills name to draw a direct line from Pop Wills, through Bob, to Don and Ron today. Now recording for StowTown Records, the Wills Brothers Quartet carries that legacy forward — a family gospel heritage that began in 1938, a quartet tradition dating to 1958, and a new chapter carrying that music and ministry on.
